What to do in and around Tremezzo
Tremezzo is home to two of the lake's finest garden estates and offers easy boat access to a third. Ferry day trips to Bellagio and Menaggio round out the itinerary.
One of Lake Como's most celebrated botanical gardens, famous for rhododendrons and azaleas in spring. The neoclassical villa houses a fine art collection. Open April–October; lakefront entrance steps from the Tremezzo pier.

Direct boat taxi from Tremezzo pier to Villa del Balbianello takes around 10 minutes. Taxis depart from the lakefront near Bar Centrale — arrange on arrival or ask your hotel to book in advance.
Walk the SS340 lakeside path south from Tremezzo toward Lenno — a peaceful 3 km stretch with open lake views, ancient plane trees, and the Villa Balbianello headland coming into sight. Flat and easy.
Cross to Bellagio in around 30 minutes on the slow ferry or hydrofoil — the peninsula's Villa Melzi gardens and steep silk-shop lanes are easy to explore in half a day. Ferries depart from the Tremezzo pier.
Ascend via Via Rogaro from the village toward Monte Crocione for sweeping lake panoramas. The route climbs through chestnut woodland above the shore — allow 2–3 hours for the full round trip. Best in spring and autumn.

When to visit Tremezzo
Tremezzo's gardens are the headline — and they are only part of the year. Villa Carlotta's rhododendrons peak in May; Villa del Balbianello's headland is calm in spring and autumn; in winter the western shore goes quiet and the rates drop.
June through August: lake 20–25°C, air 24–30°C. Villa Carlotta at full stride with extended hours. Slow ferries north to Bellagio and south to Como running on the April–October timetable. La Terrazza at Grand Hotel Tremezzo books out weeks ahead for sunset terrace tables in late July.
April through May, then September and October: lake 14–20°C, air 16–24°C. Late April is when Villa Carlotta's rhododendrons turn entire avenues pink — the signature Tremezzo experience. The boat taxi to Villa del Balbianello runs from the pier, and the SS340 lakefront promenade south to Lenno is at its most peaceful.
November through March: lake 6–12°C, air 4–12°C. Villa Carlotta typically closes from November through March; the lakefront promenade retains open views year-round. Slow ferries run, Villa del Balbianello keeps limited winter hours. The best villa rates and the quietest lakeside walks of the year.
When to visit Tremezzo — practical tips
- Villa Carlotta is open April–October with the rhododendrons typically peaking late April to mid-May. The headland villa at Villa del Balbianello is FAI-managed and closes intermittent weeks in winter — check schedules before you go.
- The Tremezzo pier has no car ferry — Menaggio's car ferry is 20 minutes north on the slow ferry if you want to bring a car across. This is less of a constraint in winter than it sounds.
- Hydrofoils to Bellagio are an April–October service — winter crossings revert to the slow ferry (~30 min). For Villa del Balbianello in winter, ask locally about boat taxi availability from Lenno.
- La Terrazza at Grand Hotel Tremezzo is the signature Tremezzo dining experience; book at least a week ahead in high season, walk-in feasible in shoulder months.
- Late September is the lake's best-kept secret: warm light on the western shore, gardens still open a few weeks, and villa rates well below July.

The rhododendrons at Villa Carlotta in late April were unreal — entire pink avenues down to the lake. Easily the best garden visit on Como and almost no queues.
The 10-minute boat taxi from Tremezzo pier straight up to Villa del Balbianello is one of the great experiences on the lake — loggia views across both arms.
Tremezzo felt calmer than Bellagio but still had the western-shore views. The waterfront promenade south to Lenno was our favourite walk of the trip.

How to reach Tremezzo
Tremezzo sits on the SS340 western lake road, approximately 35 minutes and 28 km north of Como by car — one of the most scenic drives on the lake.

By road
SS340 from Como (~35 min, 28 km) along the western shore. From Milan, take the A9 motorway to Como, then the lake road north. Allow extra time in summer — the SS340 narrows through tunnels above the lake.
Step 2
By ferry
From Bellagio (~30 min slow ferry) or from Como lungolago on the slow ferry heading north. From Menaggio, take the slow ferry south (~20 min). All services stop at the SS340 lakefront pier.
Step 3
Explore on foot
Villa Carlotta's entrance is a 5-minute walk from the pier. The lakefront promenade, Bar Centrale, and the pier for boat taxis to Balbianello are all within easy walking distance.

Getting to Tremezzo from...
- Milan by car: ~80 km, ~1h 20min. A9 motorway to Como, then SS340 north along the western shore for 28 km. Straightforward in off-peak hours.
- Milan Malpensa: ~90 km, ~1h 30min via A8/A9 motorway combination to Como, then SS340. Best option if arriving with luggage from the airport.
- Train + ferry: Train from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni (~45 min), then slow ferry or hydrofoil north from Como's lungolago to Tremezzo (~60 min). Scenic and no parking needed.
- Nearest train station: Tremezzo has no station — the nearest is Como San Giovanni, ~28 km south along the SS340.
- Como San Giovanni (train + ferry): 45 min by train from Milano Centrale, then ferry/hydrofoil north to Tremezzo pier (~60 min). The standard rail-to-lake combination for this side of the lake.
- From Bellagio by ferry: The most picturesque approach — ~30 min slow ferry from Bellagio pier across to Tremezzo. Runs multiple times daily.
- From Switzerland: A2 motorway via Lugano, then SS340 south to Tremezzo (~50 min from Lugano). A beautiful approach through the upper lake before the western shore opens up.
Parking is limited — mostly SS340 laybys and a small paid lot near the Villa Carlotta entrance. Spaces fill by 10am in July and August. Consider arriving by ferry from Como to avoid the road.
Pre-booked drivers from Malpensa or Milan deliver you directly to your Tremezzo hotel — fixed price, no meter. The most relaxed option for late arrivals at lakeside villas with no front desk.
