What to do in and around Menaggio
Menaggio is more than a ferry hub. Its hillside position, lakeside piazza, and proximity to the Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club make it a destination in its own right.
One of Italy's oldest golf courses, founded 1907. A lakeside 18-hole course with views across to Bellagio. Tee times book up fast in peak season.
The lakeside gardens at Villa Erba are open to the public year-round. Locals jog the perimeter path; visitors come for the flowers and lake views. Hosts concerts and events in summer.
Wander the cobblestone lanes above the main piazza. Vintage shops, a gelateria that locals swear by, and a church with views across the western arm of the lake.
The trail from Menaggio up to the ridge above the lake rewards you with panoramic views of the entire Y-shape of Lake Como. Allow 2–3 hours for the full loop. Start from the top of Via Madonna.
The Menaggio–Varenna car ferry runs every 30 minutes across the central lake. Bring the car and you've done the classic Lake Como road trip — even if you don't drive anywhere else.

When to visit Menaggio
Menaggio is a year-round base — but each season brings a different rhythm to Piazza Garibaldi and the western lakefront. Spring and autumn keep the ferries running with a fraction of the summer crowd; winter empties the waterfront and opens the golf to members and locals.
June through August: lake 20–25°C, air 24–30°C. Menaggio's waterfront terraces fill by 8pm, the car ferry to Varenna runs every 30 minutes on its summer cadence, and the Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club is busy with summer visitors. Piazza Garibaldi hosts evening concerts and open-air dining.
April through May, then September and October: lake 14–20°C, air 16–24°C. The lungolago north toward the lido has space to walk, the ferries still run on the full April–October timetable, and the Villa Erba gardens are in bloom in May or soft light in October. Hiking trails above the lake are at their best.
November through March: lake 6–12°C, air 4–12°C. Slow ferries only — the car ferry to Varenna continues year-round but other routes reduce to hourly. The promenade runs quiet, the golf club is members' hours, and villa rates drop. Best for quiet villa weeks in February, before the spring rush.
When to visit Menaggio — practical tips
- Menaggio's car ferry runs year-round, every 30 minutes — one of the western shore's biggest winter advantages over hydrofoil-only towns.
- Hydrofoils pause November–March — the Como crossing reverts to the slow ferry (~2h) unless you change at Bellagio.
- Hiking above the lake is at its best in spring and autumn — the ridge trails to Monte Crocione are too hot in high summer and too icy in deep winter. Late May and late September are the comfortable windows.
- Piazza Garibaldi hosts evening concerts in summer — book a waterfront table for those nights well in advance, or plan dinner somewhere else and walk over for the music.
- Book 2–3 months ahead for July villas: the western shore has fewer properties than Bellagio, and the best ones go to repeat visitors first in peak season.

The 18-hole lakeside golf course was the unexpected highlight — three holes along the water with the Grigne looming behind. Worth the green fee just for the views.

How to reach Menaggio
Menaggio sits on the SS340 lake road, 25 km north of Como on the western shore. Drive from Milan in under an hour; arrive by ferry from Como, Bellagio, or Varenna.

SS340 runs the full western shore from Como (25 km, ~35 min). From Milan, take the A9 motorway to Como Nord, then the lake road north. Parking at Piazzaxdella Repubblica or via Carlo Amoretti.

Arrive by ferry
From Como's lungolago, take the slow ferry north to Menaggio (~2h) or the hydrofoil to Bellagio then cross to Menaggio (~1h). From Bellagio or Varenna, the car ferry crosses every 30 min.

- Milan (car): ~50 km. A9 motorway to Como Nord, then SS340 north along the lake. Allow 1–1.5 hours depending on traffic. Toll ~€8 each way.
- Milan Malpensa (car): ~75 km, ~1.5 hours. A8/A9 motorway combination via Como. Most direct if you have luggage.
- Milan (train + ferry): Train from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni (45 min), then ferry from Como lungolago to Menaggio (~2h slow ferry or ferry to Bellagio + connection).
- Nearest train station: Menaggio has no station — the nearest is Como San Giovanni, 25 km south along SS340.
- Como San Giovanni (train + ferry): 45 min by train from Milano Centrale, then ferry south ~2h or ferry to Bellagio + connection. The standard rail approach for the western shore.
- By ferry from Bellagio: Car ferry or passenger ferry every 30 min, ~25 min crossing. Most scenic approach — pull up to Menaggio by water.

Limited parking in the centre. Parcheggio Carlo Amoretti (north of town, 5 min walk) is the most reliable. In summer, arrive before 10am to secure a spot.
