What to do in and around Cernobbio
Cernobbio is often described as one of the lake's most elegant towns — smaller and quieter than Menaggio, with a focus on gardens, slow lakeside living, and easy access to the water.
The lakeside gardens at Villa Erba are open to the public year-round. The perimeter path is popular with joggers and walkers; the flower beds and lake views draw visitors from across the lake. Hosts concerts and events in summer.
A short drive or ferry ride south to Lenno. This extraordinary villa juts out on a headland into the lake — its terraced gardens and loggia are among the most photographed spots on all of Lake Como. Arrive early to beat the tour groups.
The lakeside path from Piazza Risorgimento south toward Como is one of the most pleasant walks on the western shore — tree-lined, with benches, and views across to the Riserva Naturable Monte di Partora on the far bank.
Silk weaving is Como's signature industry, and the Museo della Seta in the city traces 500 years of silk production. A 15-minute drive or ferry from Cernobbio — combine it with a morning in Como's pedestrian old town.
The trail from Cernobbio up to Monte Grona (1736m) rewards hikers with sweeping views across the lake's western arm. Partially forested, with open ridgelines — allow 3–4 hours for the full loop from the village.

June through August: lake 20–25°C, air 24–30°C. Villa Erba's lakeside gardens host summer concerts; the Cernobbio lakefront promenade south toward Como draws evening strollers; hydrofoils to Como are frequent on the full April–October timetable. Ristorante La Brea's terrace tables book out weeks ahead.
April through May, then September and October: lake 14–20°C, air 16–24°C. Villa Erba's gardens show their best in May and again in October's golden light. The promenade runs uncrowded, restaurants take walk-ins, and hydrofoils to Como continue on the April–October timetable.
November through March: lake 6–12°C, air 4–12°C. Slow boats only — the hydrofoil to Como usually pauses for the season, and Bellagio crossings require connections via Como. The promenade runs quiet; Villa Erba's gardens stay open for short winter hours. Villa rates are at their lowest.
When to visit Cernobbio — practical tips
- Hydrofoils to Como usually pause November–March — the 15-minute crossing reverts to a 30-minute slow ferry. For winter Bellagio connections, change at Como.
- Villa Erba gardens stay open year-round but with reduced winter hours and fewer flowers. The perimeter walk remains a favourite of joggers and Cernobbio residents regardless of season.

- Buy tickets at the pier — the Cernobbio ferry booth is near Piazza Risorgimento. In summer, arrive 20 minutes before departure to secure a spot on the hydrofoil.
- Hydrofoils to Como are fast (~15 min) and run frequently between April and October. The slow ferry is cheaper and scenic if you have more time.
- Connections to Bellagio are direct in summer — in winter, you may need to change boats at Como or another stop. Allow extra time for connections.

How to reach Cernobbio
Cernobbio sits on the SS340 lake road, 8 km north of Como on the western shore. Drive from Milan in under an hour; arrive by ferry from Como, Bellagio, or Menaggio.

SS340 runs the western shore from Como (8 km, ~15 min). From Milan, take the A9 motorway to Como Nord, then the lake road north. Parking in Piazza Risorgimento or along the waterfront road.

Arrive by ferry
From Como's lungolago, take the hydrofoil north to Cernobbio (~15 min). From Bellagio or Menaggio, take the ferry south to Cernobbio (~30–40 min). Ferry pier is a 5-minute walk from the village centre.

Cernobbio is compact — the waterfront piazza, Villa Erba gardens, and ferry pier are all within a short walk. The lakefront promenade connects south toward Como.

- Milan Malpensa (car): ~55 km, ~1 hour. A8/A9 motorway combination via Como. Most direct if you have luggage.
- Milan (train + ferry): Train from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni (45 min), then ferry from Como lungolago north to Cernobbio (~15–30 min depending on boat type).
- Nearest train station: Cernobbio has no station — the nearest is Como San Giovanni, 8 km south on the SS340.
- By ferry from Como: Hydrofoil from Como's lungolago runs frequently in season, ~15 min. The slow ferry takes ~30 min and is pleasant if you want to sightsee along the way.
- By ferry from Bellagio: Direct service south in summer (~40 min). In winter, check connections — you may transit via Como.
- From Switzerland: A2 motorway to Lugano, then SS340 south to Cernobbio (~35 min from Lugano). Beautiful lakeside stretch through Gandria.
Piazza Risorgimento has pay parking (blue lines). In summer, spaces fill early — particularly at weekends. Free parking is available along the lake road south of the village.
Pre-booked drivers meet you at Malpensa or Milan and deliver you to your Cernobbio hotel. Fixed price, no meter. Worth it if you're arriving late or with bags — particularly for villa rentals with no front desk.
Many villas in the Cernobbio area have private jetties. Your host may offer a boat pickup from the Cernobbio pier or from the Villa Erba waterfront. Ask when you book — it's the most memorable arrival on the lake.
