Where to eat in Varenna
Varenna's restaurant scene is intimate — no mass-market tourist traps, just genuine family-run places and a few standout spots that pull in visitors from across the lake. Book waterfront tables in July and August; for the rest of the year, you'll find a table easily.
A 10-minute walk from the waterfront, this local favourite serves lake fish and traditional Lombard dishes on a vine-covered terrace. Unpretentious and consistently good. Reserve for dinner in summer.
Tucked into the old quarter above the waterfront. Handmade pasta, locally sourced ingredients, and a handful of outdoor tables under the wisteria. The kind of place you find once and return every time you're in Varenna.

What to do in and around Varenna
Varenna rewards the unhurried — it's small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes, but the surrounding hillside, the gardens, and the villages above offer enough for several days of exploration.
A lakeside villa with extraordinary gardens stretching 1 km along the waterfront. The house is a museum; the gardens are open to all. Come early in the morning or late afternoon to experience them at their most peaceful.
A medieval castle perched on the hilltop above Varenna, reachable by the steep but scenic path from the village. Views across the entire eastern arm of the lake. Hosts falconry demonstrations in summer.
Varenna's waterfront path runs from the ferry pier south to the neo-Gothic Villa Cipressi. Flat, easy, and one of the most scenic short walks on the lake — especially at dusk when the light hits the water.
A small public lido at the southern end of the waterfront — rocky, not sandy, but clear water and a beautiful setting. Less crowded than Bellagio's beach. Good for a swim after a morning visit to Villa Monastero.
The path from Varenna south along the lakeside leads to Bellano and the Orrido di Bellano — a dramatic gorge carved by the Pioverna stream. About 45 minutes each way. Cool, shaded, and spectacular in spring after rain.
From Varenna's pier it's a 20-minute crossing to Bellagio, 25 minutes to Menaggio. Use the ferry as your day trip — Bellagio for the tip of the peninsula, Menaggio for the golf and the old town. Every crossing is a scenic highlight.

When to visit Varenna
Varenna's appeal holds year-round — but the character changes with the season. Spring brings the lakeside promenade back into bloom; summer fills the central pier with day-trippers; autumn paints the hillside; winter empties the streets and lowers the lake to its most photographic light.
June through August: lake 20–25°C, air 24–30°C, full hydrofoil timetable to Bellagio and the car ferry to Menaggio every 30 minutes. Varenna's waterfront promenade fills by mid-morning, and the lakeside dining tables at Bar Il Molo are reserved days ahead in late July.
April through May, then September and October: lake 14–20°C, air 16–24°C. Villa Monastero's gardens show their best in May and again in October's golden light. The promenade has space to walk, the ferries still run on the full April–October timetable, and the lakeside restaurants take walk-ins.
November through March: lake 6–12°C, air 4–12°C. Slow ferries only — often hourly, hydrofoils paused for the season. Varenna's promenade runs quiet, fishing boats are the only boats on the water, and villa rates drop to their lowest. Villa Monastero gardens close — plan accordingly.
When to visit Varenna — practical tips
- The car ferry to Menaggio runs year-round, every 30 minutes — Varenna's central position keeps it well-connected even when other lake services thin out in winter.
- Hydrofoils pause November–March — the Bellagio crossing stretches back to ~35 min on the slow ferry. Plan extra time for Como connections in winter.
- Villa Monastero gardens are typically open April–October. May brings the best blooms; the museums and the lakefront garden are the highlights of any shoulder-month visit.
- Day-trippers fill Varenna from late morning onward, even more than Bellagio — early mornings or sunset hours are the calmest on the promenade.
- Late September is the secret window for warm light, fewer ferries, and villa rates below shoulder-season July prices. Many of Varenna's signature experiences come alive in this single month.

Tips for ferry travel from Varenna
- Buy tickets at the booth on the pier before boarding. In peak season (July–August), queues can form — especially for the morning crossings to Bellagio. Buying online in advance is the safest bet.
- Car ferry to Menaggio is Varenna's biggest practical advantage — bring the car and you've got maximum flexibility for exploring the western shore. Runs year-round, every 30 minutes.
- Fast boats to Bellagio are the most popular crossing — 20 minutes and you arrive right in the centre of the peninsula town. Hydrofoils don't take cars; book separately if you need vehicle transport.
- Connecting to Como always requires a change at Bellagio. Allow at least 1.5 hours for the full leg. The Bellagio crossing is scenic enough to make the change worth it.
- Evening crossings back to Varenna from Bellagio run until around 8pm in summer. Winter timetable is shorter — check Navigazione Laghi schedules before planning a late return.

Getting to Varenna
How to reach Varenna
Varenna sits on the eastern shore of the lake, 12 km north of Lecco on the SS36 lake road. The most scenic approach is by ferry from Bellagio or Menaggio — arriving by water is the quintessential Varenna experience.
Step 1
Arrive by road
SS36 runs the eastern lakeshore from Lecco (12 km, ~20 min) north to Colico. From Milan, take the A4 to Lecco, then the lake road north. Parking at Parcheggio Comunale (near the station) — a 10-minute walk from the waterfront.
Step 2
Arrive by ferry
The classic arrival. From Bellagio's waterfront, the ferry crosses in ~20 minutes. From Menaggio, the car ferry takes ~25 minutes. Both ferries arrive at the main pier right on the waterfront promenade.
Step 3
Arrive by train
Varenna-Esino is on the Milan–Tirano regional line (R14). From Milano Centrale, change at Lecco or take the direct train. From the station, it's a 15-minute downhill walk (or a short taxi ride) to the waterfront.

- Milan (car): ~60 km. A4 to Lecco, then SS36 north along the eastern shore to Varenna. Allow 1–1.5 hours. The SS36 is scenic but can be busy on summer weekends.
- Milan (train): Direct regional trains from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino (~1h 20min). Change at Lecco for faster connections. The Lecco branch of the R14 runs every 30–60 minutes.
- Varenna-Esino station: 15 min downhill walk to the waterfront; trains run every 30–60 min to Lecco / Milano Centrale (~1h 20min total).
- By ferry from Bellagio: The most satisfying approach. Fast boat from Bellagio waterfront, ~20 min. Runs year-round, every 30 minutes.
- By ferry from Menaggio: Car ferry every 30 min, ~25 min crossing. Arrive right on the waterfront promenade — no further walk required.
- By ferry from Como: Regular ferry from Como lungolago. Typically involves a change at Bellagio. Total journey ~1h 30min to 2 hours.
- From Lecco: SS36 north, 12 km, about 20 minutes by car or taxi. Or take the train one stop — Varenna-Esino is on the line.
The station is 15 minutes uphill from the waterfront — a pleasant walk in good weather, a short taxi in rain or with luggage. Trains run every 30–60 minutes to/from Lecco and Milan.
Parcheggio Comunale is the main lot, 600m from the waterfront. Covered and reasonably priced. In peak season, arrive before mid-morning. Some hotels have private parking — ask when you book.
